Dan Tonkin, known throughout the dive community as Aqua Dan, is an underwater photographer and videographer based on Queensland’s Fraser Coast — a region renowned for its humpback whales, coral reefs, and rich marine biodiversity.
Originally from country New South Wales, Daniel’s connection to the sea began on a life-changing dive at Lady Elliot Island, where he found himself 18 metres down, surrounded by a fever of eagle rays in crystal-clear water — a moment that ignited his passion for the underwater world.

Soon after, he picked up his first camera, Sea & Sea housing, and strobe system.
His photography style blends cinematic storytelling, bold visual composition, and the raw beauty of nature beneath the surface.

Dan now works under his personal brand, Aqua Dan Creatives, producing high-end underwater imagery for tourism boards, brands, conservation initiatives, and community organisations. His work is sold both locally at his artisan market stall and online, where his images have become a visual gateway into the ocean for audiences around the world.

He is also the co-founder of Sirens Dive, a boutique dive mask and swimwear brand created with his partner and dive buddy Julie, an accomplished underwater model and mermaid. Together, they create vibrant, editorial-style campaigns that champion both style and sustainability beneath the surface.

In addition to his photographic work, Daniel has launched in-person underwater photography workshops locally in Hervey Bay to help others build their skills and connect more deeply with the ocean. In 2025, he will expand this mission with the launch of an educational YouTube channel, aiming to inspire the next generation of ocean storytellers. His goal is not only to share his knowledge — but to help more people fall in love with the sea, and ultimately, protect it.
